ESTABLISHMENT AND MAINTANANCE OF LAWN
DEFINITION:
A lawn has a charm all its own. It serves to enhance the beauty of a garden, be it large or small. It enhances the beauty of surrounding objects, whether they are trees, shrubs or flower beds.
ESTABLISHMENT
OF LAWN:
Grass being
one of the most hardiest perennial herbs, it is not difficult to keep a lawn in
good condition provided one takes good care of it. The view of the lawn from the
veranda and the windows of the house should be free and uninterrupted. A spacious
lawn may be provided with beds of flowering plants, a group of shrubs or trees
of attractive form or specimen shrubs as thuja orientalis or traveller
palm or large succulents and there in pockets made in the lawn to
form colonies of themselves and bear their beautiful flowers. Roof garden lawns
on terraces have become a common sight and feature in almost all cities today. Before
laying a roof lawn the drainage aspect of the roof and the load which the roof
can withstand are to be considered. Good water proofing treatment has to be
given to the roof along with slope to drain water into seepage collecting
troughs on the terraces itself. To reduce the weight of the soil on the roof,
lighter soil media like peat, vermiculite, coconut husk powder, etc. Are to be
mixed with farm manure and leaf mould. The depth of medium may be around 12-15
cm. terrace lawns, apart from their aesthetic value are reported to lower the
room temperature considerably.
In making a lawn it is essential that the ground be prepared properly, the surface being thoroughly dug and uniformly levelled, coarse stones, roots and other obstacles being removed and surface made smooth. Provision for drainage of excess rain water should be made if the ground is not sloppy. Let the ground settle down during the first showers. Any weed that may come up may be removed.
MAINTANANCE
OF LAWN:
After making
a lawn ; rolling, moving, watering and restoration of patchy places should
receive regular attention.
Weeds should
be pulled out as soon as they appear otherwise they soon spread, seeds multiply
and overpower the grass. The gaps occupied by the weeds are filled with grass
roots and fine soil.
In the absence
of rain, it is watered regularly at 10 days interval.
Mowing should
be done at brief intervals and never allowed to produce seed stalks.
Heavy roller
should be used frequently but not when the ground is either too wet or dry. A mower
should not be employed until a firm green sword has been formed. The grass is
first cut with a sickle and the surface is then rolled.
To have a
perfect green lawn, it is fed once a month with a liquid manure prepared by
dissolving 45g of ammonium sulphate in 5 litres of water.
Once in a
year, it is raked before the rain, top dressed with a rich mixture of well
decomposed manure and sand. This will stimulate the grass with a new vigorous
growth.
A spacious lawn though beautiful will often be monotonous. So, to break the monotony, some beautiful tree or shrub is recommended as ‘single specimen’ in the lawn.
